First of all you would need a visa to visit UK.
I don't think Malaysian nationals residing legally in US and travelling to UK need a visitor visa...But I am not sure if UK visa law considers pending I-485 (AOS) a valid status....If you still maintain a valid H1 status but plan to re-enter on AP, you should be ok in my view...

"AOS applicant". So she is NOT out of status.
Is she has to file H4 as my friend's dependent?

Ask both of them to have their EAD ready, if they don't have them yet.

One of friends 485(primary) was pending and his wife's 485(derivative) also pending.
Both of them are on H1(different employers) and they both lay-off around the same time about 4 months ago. My friends employer has been running paychecks for him but his wife's employer canceled her H1.

I'm currently working for Company A on H1B Visa. My GC is sponsored through Company B as a future employee. I never worked for Company B which has sponsored for my GC. I have applied for I485 and I140 has been approved for more than 6 months.
Company A is going through lay offs and wont be able to apply for my GC. My 6 yr limit on H1B from Company A will expire next year.
Can i apply for H1B extension through Company A based on my I-140 from Company B.

Yesterday I went to a training for immigration attorneys in Sacramento, California. While I did not learn anything new about what is happening at Sacramento USCIS, I did learn about new procedures being applied to applicants applying for visas abroad.
It seems that applicants who have tattoos are being screened more carefully at their medical appointments. The belief is that an individual with a tatoo may be involved in gang activity which furthermore may lead to that individual engaging in substance abuse. In a published article included in conference materials at the American Immigration Lawyers Association�s (�AILA (http://www.aila.org/)�) annual conference, immigration lawyers Fernando Rojas and Magda Montiel Davis, explain what is happening:
Panel physicians are asking applicants about the meaning of their tattoos and the medical personnel conducting the exam will take notes describing the tattoo. This interrogation could lead to further questions about the applicant�s possible gang affiliation and criminal history. Applicants with tattoos are also being questioned by the panel physician regarding their substance abuse history. Apparently, panel physicians are making the assumption that applicants with tattoos are more likely to do or abuse drugs. If the beneficiary admits to any drug use, Consulates will use this information against the applicant in order to deny the visa by making a substance abuse finding against them.A finding of substance abuse is serious because an applicant who is a drug user or abuser may be denied admission to the United States pursuant to Immigration and Nationality Act Section 212(a)(1)(A)(iv) (http://www.uscis.gov/propub/ProPubVAP.jsp?dockey=9b60c646835045a30ceca097f0ca1 ba3). I would counsel anyone carefully who has a tattoo to be very honest about what the tattoo means. It is absolutely feasible to do this on your own. After all you are well educated by definition of your H1B visa. The only thing you need from your employer is the letter of employment and you will need a public notary to notarize the affidavit of support.
The rest you can put together yourself. Just filed for my husband and myself at the beginning of May, fingerprints done on June 4th. Going well so far.
We would still need the I-140 application copy (if pending) or approval notice, right? Pl let me know.

I have a approved H1b from company A. Company A also shared a copy of approval. I was never counted under H1b cap before this approval. If I now decide not to join company A and assuming company A will not cancel H1b, can I use this H1b to join another company B later using H1b transfer�???? I am presently on cap except H1b and need a cap subject H1b in order to move to any private firm. So approval from company A matters a lot to me.

Didnt see anyone posting more on Paper filing.
I checked out the awesome post by Dhundhun on E-filing/paper filing etc - he has done a great job posting good info on self filing EAD/AP.
Was just looking for responses from someone who did paper filing in recent past and also if he/she faced any issues etc.

I-9 form mentions temporary I-551 stamp on passport. The same stamp that can be used for travel (I think). So, there might be a way to work without the physical green card temporarily with the approval notice.

I think that as far as company A agrees, it shouldn't be a problem. I believe the GC application is for a future job offer.

The NC DMV is taking a really long time to validate my EAD. Its been over 60 days now since my license renewal based on EAD expiring October 2010. They keep sending me back with a temporary license valid for 15 days saying they are yet to validate and issue my perm license based on EAD.

As far as I know, you can file (or even decide not to file if you have H-1) anytime. This should not be an issue. In fact, one my friend's was in similar boat, he filed his EAD after gap of 3 months and got it approved.
EAD is only a backup for most of us if we are working on H1B. But it is better to have it renewed as you never know when you may have to use it due to layoff, firing or any other unfortunate event. It is more likely to happen due to current state of economy. CIS allows us to continue working on EAD after 180 days of filling 485 under AC21 rule.
However there are some unfortunate incidents going on where IO wrongfully denied 485 petitions when a person changed jobs using AC-21. I urge you to take part in IV AC-21 letters campaign which will help you and all of us to survive any unfortunate, unforseen job loss due to current downturn in economy. It is actully very easy, just print 4 pages and mail it thru' USPS. Won't even cost you $2. Remember this for yours and our future and peace of mind. A quick question for all you experts out there
My wife is on H4 right now and I am on H1, though we got our EAD last year, but I am still using my H1 and not used my EAD yet, So is it possible to apply for Social Security for my wife, will applying for Social Security Number, considered as using EAD and H1 becomes void.
