You can't boot XP from CD on a Mac. You can't you can't you can't. The Mac boots using EFI, which XP doesn't support.

You need to use Boot Camp to install it, as legacy BIOS emulation has to be loaded specifically for XP.

PLEASE... PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE.... don't talk if you don't know what you are saying. I'm not perfect... but I can absolutely, ABSOLUTELY guarantee ... GUARANTEE YOU... that you CAN indeed boot XP from the new Macs WITHOUT BOOTCAMP WHATSOEVER.

That is how I have my iMac (24") setup...

The FIRST thing I did when I took her out of the box was insert the WINXP SP2 CD... (nothing slipstreamed)... and hold down the "c" key...

Voila! Booting into XP Setup... COMPLETELY FORMATTED THE ENTIRE 500GB DRIVE with XP... and she runs great.

I then attached an EXTERNAL FW800 RAID 0 Setup (1TB now)... and boot OS X off that external slice...

So... JUST SO YOU KNOW! Please try not to confuse the rest of the class Billy, uhmKay? ;)

There's no such thing as a 'normal person'. The 'normal people' he is reffering to are the computer illiterate. Being computer illiterate dosen't make you normal.

Agnostic maybe but not illiterate. Would you call a person who knows no more about a pencil than to sharpen it and draw or write illiterate?

Computer are tools to and shouldn't need to be anything more than that to the vast majority of people. Why should they need to worry anymore about the tool than they worry about the pencil.

*yes I don't consider myself normal in this respect either. What with a collection of clutch pencils and a full set of Derwents very handy.

I've read the various comments about problems with the updates with RAID 0. Can anyone confirm if the update goes ok on RAID 1? I would think it would since from a boot point of view they might as well be individual disks.

Any comments before I try this?

yeah, it would only cost them $1000+ to have someone come round to my house and do something about it, well worth the 59 they would sell the end product for

do they check everybodys IP, how do they know i wasn't at wwdc.

Exactly - why would they bother? I'm not sharing it. Plus, I paid for Jaguar (well, the computer it came on), I paid for Panther, I paid for Tiger and I'll 100% certainly be paying for Leopard when it comes out. I want to play with the new features every so often, and get myself all excited about what's to come. How exactly am I hurting Apple? They'd be fools to drive away a long time and dedicated customer by throwing legal issues at me.

. I am definitelynot a 'power user', but I am a hardcore gamer. And when I see a friend with a year old PC playin Warcraft with less jumpiness then my 6 month old powermac, it makes me want to switch. Power does matter to me, and you cant get much power for the amount of money I have when it comes to computers from apple.

I'm sorry about the previous two posts. When they posted they did not display right even after editing and then they wouldn't let me delete them so here is my third try. Copy and paste rather than pressing the quote button.

What PowerMac your profile says you have an iMac 333. Also I would like to see a $1600 PC beat a Dual 867/DDR. It wouldn't have a chance when you started heavy multitasking and other real world tests. Then go ahead an move on to your games and if you had a real graphics card in the 867 it would beat the PC in that to all while it was burning a cd, getting mail, surfing the net, and making an iMovie. The biggest thing though is that even at 1600 most PC's do not include all the standard hardware that you get in a Mac.

Hats off to everyone for keeping this up and running.

    Dale

Actually Dale - hats off to you for resurrecting the challenge. While I enjoy many of the threads in MR, this is by far the one of greatest interest to me. Taking on a challenge and working to achieve it in an image; getting specific feedback from others ... these are invaluable. Thanks much.

Now to figure out "beauty in unexpected places". this one is, for me, a much harder concept. At least, to do so without being cliche.

Apart from the backlit keyboard, choice of screen (which is also larger), aluminium casing, expresscard.

Some aren't that convinced that it's worth the extra coin though, and I can empathise with that view too.

OSX alone is worth spending 10 grand on a laptop. We are so lucky to have this capitalism thing. Otherwise with communism a Mac will indeed cost a year's harvest of grain.

Am I the only one that's happy about adapters?

I feel they give the maximum flexibility for the minimum port interference; I'd rather have 4 of these good-for-any-use ports on my computer than a set number of fixed use ports, some of which never get used.

    I guess it's just me?

    Sorry, you're not alone ;)

What a 'flexible' interface such as this does when coupled with adaptors is allow the basic mobile device to become smaller/thinner/etc. Overall, more desirable in its "mobile" modality.

Consider if the 1st generation iPad came with a row of legacy video ports: VGI, DVI ... and for good measure, let's include Composite & Component too, since IIRC adaptors currently exist for all of these. Even though each one of them adds "only a little bit" to the form factor of the iPad, the net result of just these is that the iPad is going to have a figurative "1.5 inch binder" now running down its side to provide the real estate. And its now going to be pushing 2lbs. Does this still sound like an awesome & compelling new mobile product? Probably not.

Now repeat the exercise and put just a DVI or VGI connector on a cellphone

The pragmatic reality is that the dongle adaptor can live at home, next to the non-mobile display that we would use with the mobile device. Since we don't have to carry it around for that use case, why should we care that it exists or how big it is? We shouldn't.

Yes, but that's just the industry bending to MS's will, not Microsoft actually producing a quality product. That's what's so frustrating here!

wonder if this is why direcTV never came out with this functionality. Generally they are ahead of the curve (TWC) with comes to actually providing value for the customers, to some degree.

Until not that long ago Fox controlled DirecTV, so that is likely why.

They have a program you can use on your computer to watch your dvr from your computer, but it has issues.. One is it does not work on a computer with dual monitors, which is just dumb.

I have to agree with most here that Pages didn't live up to my expectations. However, I can't agree with you that Word has been perfected. Word is complete nightmare in certain situations. Its non-intuitive and not very user friendly in many cases (especially the windows version!). I do prefer it to Pages, but its by no means the best that can be done..Word was nearly perfect up until about version 4.0 (on the Mac), it was all downhill from there as far as I'm concerned. As for Pages, it looked pretty goofy to me as well, but the first versions of FCP, Keynote, OS X, all the iLife apps, .Mac, and pretty much anything else they're ever done were quite flakey, slow, underfeatured, and rough around the edges too. Apple just takes a long bloody time to refine their apps until they're "ready for prime time". That's fine, because once they do get an app refined, they tend to be fantastic -- I just wish they'd stop gouging us for full price each time we upgrade from their "betas" to a release-quality app. I'll check out Pages again when it gets to version 3.0.1 or so.
